Official PlayStation 5 faceplates are finally on the way

PlayStation 5 owners who want to spice up their expensive console can finally do so with official Sony faceplates. Announced in a PlayStation Blog post this morning, players will be able to adorn their PS5 with any of five different console covers.

PS5 Console Covers

The console covers come in five distinct color variants: Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple, with versions being released for both the disc and digital versions of the PS5. Users can purchase the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red covers starting in January 2022, while the remaining three colors will launch sometime during the first half of 2022.

Anyone who wants to make sure they can customize their PS5 with a faceplate as soon as it’s available can pre-order one for $55 on PlayStation’s website right now.

Along with faceplates for the PS5, Sony has also announced three new color versions of the console’s DualSense controller. Matching the new faceplates, players can purchase Galactic Purple, Nova Pink, and Starlight Blue DualSense controllers starting January 14. Just like the faceplates, these controllers can be pre-purchased from Sony. They cost $75 each.

While new controller colors are nothing new for the PlayStation at this point, a way to change how the PS5 itself looks has been long requested by users. Numerous companies have also offered their own versions of PS5 faceplates for some time, including, most infamously, DBrand. The company, which specializes in cosmetics for various pieces of tech, was previously locked in a legal battle with Sony over its PS5 “Darkplates.”

With a mercilessly busy 2023 winding down, you’d think that I’d be ready for a break from video games. And trust me, I am, but I still can’t help but look forward to what’s on the horizon in 2024. I already know that games like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are bound to consume me, but there’s one indie game that I especially have my eye on: Ultros. The ultrastylish Metroidvania left a strong impression on me at this May’s PlayStation Showcase. That was largely thanks to its eye-popping visual style that’s unlike anything I’ve seen in a video game before.

While Ultros has the look, I was less certain about how it would actually play. I’d finally get a sense of that during a sweeping 90-minute demo. The segment I played would give me a feel for its deceptively deep combat, oddball farming component, and surprising roguelike structure. It was a complicated gameplay snippet that I couldn’t fully get my head around by the end, but that just leaves me even more curious about the final product.
The cycle goes on
At first glance, Ultros appears to be a straightforward game. It seems like your typical 2D Metroidvania where players dash through a maze-like map collecting power-ups. Within minutes, I figured I understood the entire gameplay loop. That was fine by me, because it gave me more time to soak in its wild art style, which really makes it unique. Every room is a psychedelic wash of colors that looks like a Grateful Dead poster. All the painterly details can make it a little hard to navigate, but I loved making my way through all of its gooey alien locales, which are rich with vibrant flora.

Sony’s latest partnership is a big move for PlayStation’s mobile future

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed its next big gaming partnership, and it's with a somewhat unexpected company. The game developer and publisher in question is NCSoft, a Korean company best known for its work on MMO series, namely Guild Wars and Lineage.

According to a press release, the two companies have entered into a partnership that enables them to "collaborate in various global business fields, including mobile." We asked Sony if the phrasing of "various global business fields" also applied to console games, but a representative for the company said it doesn't have anything else to share on that front currently.
