The holiday season may be over, but awards season is just heating up. The Golden Globes and Emmy Awards have been given out, and the next major event on the calendar is the Academy Awards. But who’s competing, and who is staying home this year?

The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as expected, Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed blockbuster about the creation of the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer, leads the pack. The other half of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, Barbie, did well, too, getting nominations in the Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor categories.

Other movies that were recognized include Alexander Payne’s new Christmas classic The Holdovers with Paul Giamatti, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Lady Frankenstein sex comedy Poor Things with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper’s biopic Maestro starring the actor as the great composer Leonard Bernstein.

There ended up being a fair number of unique, pulse-pounding thrillers released this year. While not all of 2023’s best nail-biters were released in the same fashion or welcomed quite as well as others, either, each managed to offer completely different experiences to those who pressed play or took the time out to see them in the theater. Now, with the year in the midst of winding down, it’s worth looking back at some of 2023’s greatest cinematic offerings and honoring the ones that have made the biggest lasting impressions.

A few weeks ago, Christopher Nolan’s towering historical blockbuster Oppenheimer landed on Blu-ray. Within days, the disc sold out everywhere, disappearing from online retail inventories and brick-and-mortar shelves alike. In an age when physical media is supposedly on its deathbed, pushed to the brink of extinction by the convenience of streaming, here was what used to be called a “home-video release” so in demand that it started fetching the exorbitant resale rate of a cult classic long out of print. Such is the anomalous power of a pop-culture sensation whose success we’re still finding new ways to quantify.

By most metrics that count, Oppenheimer was the movie of 2023. Plenty of fans — including, incidentally, the author of this article — would argue that it’s actually the best film of the year: a dazzling cerebral spectacle that views the dark legacy of its subject, the so-called Father of the Atomic Bomb, as a chain reaction of political, philosophical, and existential consequences. But even with the question of its artistic merit set aside, Oppenheimer still looms impossibly large over the year in cinema. Nothing else achieved such a perfect fusion of multiplex popularity, rapturous acclaim, and mass cultural curiosity. No, not even Barbie, the chipper, brightly colored yin to Oppenheimer's depressive, muted yang.
